1. Atomic Theory Time Travel Mission Democritus first introduced the concept of atoms thousands of years ago. Since then, our understanding of the atom has slowly expanded up until today. It is your job to bring him up to date. 2. Atoms Attack The United States Secretary of Defense has drafted you and the best professional defense team in the world, to research each planet element and establish a defense mechanism to save the world from destruction. But first, you and your team need to find out characteristics about a particular element. 3. Chemical Companies in the United States We are going to spend some time investigating some of the top chemical producers in the United States. During this investigation we will use the home pages to determine the "company line". 4. Chemical Industry This web quest is designed to give you exposure to some of the companies that manufacture chemicals and pharmaceuticals. 5. Element Report You have to write and present in class an Element Report. This is a thorough description of an element (properties, uses, history, etc.), which will be assigned to your group. 6. Evidence for Atoms Your task is to search for the evidence that persuaded Dalton of the existence of atoms and for the evidence that helped shape his ideas about atoms. 7. Gas Laws You are the owner of a SCUBA diving academy. In order to make sure none of your divers get sick or die due to scuba diving, you need to make your diving students aware of the gas laws that affect diving, such as Dalton's Law, Boyle's Law, Henry's Law, and Charles' Law. 8. Great PVC Controversy Coming up with a solution won't be easy. Using PVC has risks, and some people would like to ban it. This may seem like a good idea, but alternatives to PVC aren't always easy to find. In this activity, you and a partner will set out on a quest to find solutions to the PVC dilemma. 9. It's All About Bonding Use the Periodic Table as a guide to determine why certain compounds can or cannot mix -- why they either form bonds or remain in conflict. 10. Modern Atomic Theory What did the 19th century chemistry student learn about atoms? Did they learn about subatomic particles? These are the questions you and your partner will investigate using this webquest. 11. Nuclear Chemistry What comes first to your mind when the term nuclear chemistry is brought up? Are the bomb, nuclear power and radiation poisioning the only things nuclear chemistry has to offer? In this quest you will find the answers to these questions and learn a tremendous amount about nuclear chemistry. 12. Organic Compounds Pick an organic compound from the list provided, and prepare a report based on your research of that compound. 13. Organics Hit the Market! Picture this: you and a team of learners are presented with the task of creating an advertisement about an organic group in order to inform your classmates of the pertinent information pertaining to your organic compound group. 14. Plastics and Polymers You and your partner will choose one particular polymer and find out what you can about its structure, its uses, its effect on your life, and how it is made. Then you will use that information to prepare a presentation for your whole class. 15. Powered by Chemistry You and your team members are going to explore one topic concerning energy and chemistry. You will investigate the science involved, the people and stories behind the science, and the impacts (for good or ill) of that science on our world. 16. Recycling Plastics Learn about the different types of plastics, and how they can be recycled; explore the history of plastics and find out what properties make a material a plastic; research what kinds of items can be made from recycled plastics. 17. Safety 101 We will utilize this Web Quest to learn the basics of lab safety. 18. The Chemistry Blimp The history of airships involves some great chemistry, but it also involves some really bad chemistry. The chemical mistakes made by airship designers of the past have led to tragic results. This WebQuest now takes you on a lighter-than-air flight through the chemistry behind the successes and failures of airships. 19. The Element In this activity you will be traveling to various Internet sites in order to obtain information about your assigned element. You will find historical information, chemical and physical properties data, and current uses and worth information about your element. 20. The Great MTBE Controversy Your challenge is to investigate the benefits and risks associated with using MTBE and to formulate an opinion on whether the United States government was right to ban its use. 21. The Junkyard of Chemistry Ideas Chemistry, like any other science, has a big junkyard where its debunked theories rust away. In this activity, your mission is to explore a debunked theory and in doing so gain an understanding of the evidence that debunked it, and theories that have replaced it. 22. The Periodic Table Your task is to learn about an element listed on the Periodic Table of Elements; a number of steps will be completed in the process. |
