Developed by
Introduction | Task | Process | Evaluation | Conclusion Making good food choices is important to overall
good health. The following activities
will help you learn more about good nutrition and planning/selecting healthy
foods.
Using
the Bristow Schools Website, select a single day's lunch menu from the school
cafeteria (specify the day/date chosen and foods served). Bristow High School Cafeteria http://www.bristow.k12.ok.us/ms/middle%20cafe%20lunch.htm Determine
how many servings of each food group is contained in the selected lunch menu
and then plan a breakfast and dinner menu that would satisfy the dietary
requirements as outlined by the Food Guide Pyramid. Write out the complete menus for the three meals and label each
food according to its designated food group.
Tally up number of servings from each food group for the day. Consumer Information
Center: The Food Guide Pyramid http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/food/food-pyramid/main.htm Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2000 http://www.usda.gov/cnpp/Pubs/DG2000/Index.htm USDA Food Guide Pyramids http://www.usda.gov/news/usdakids/food_pyr.html If you or a family member were a vegetarian, how
might you adapt the day's menu planned above? Vegetarian Food Guide
Pyramid http://www.llu.edu/llu/nutrition/vegguide.html http://www.utexas.edu/courses/ntr311/nutinfo/pyramid/vfp.html Check
your menu planning skills by playing the "Rate Your Plate"
interactive game. List examples of at
least five meals planned and evaluated.
State what rating each received.
"Rate Your Plate" - interactive game http://sp.uconn.edu/~cthompso/ Make
a chart listing at least ten (10) of your favorite snack and/or fast foods in
the first column and the number of servings you might eat in a typical day in
the second column. In the third
column, record each food's group according to the Food Guide Pyramid. Write a summary paragraph that tells about
the foods on your list that could fit into a healthy diet and those that
should be limited or eliminated. The Fabulous Food Guide
Pyramid http://www.kidshealth.org/teen/food_fitness/nutrition/pyramid.html Did you have difficulty determining in which food group your favorite snacks belonged? If possible, view the video online, and read through the follow-up Q & A exercises. Compile a list of information that is important for a consumer to know about food labels. Food Labeling Educational Video http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~comm/vltlabel.html Brings five food
labels from the wrappers, bags, or boxes of food you have eaten over the past
few days. Glue each label to a piece
of paper and identify them by the name of the product. Using nutritional information from the
Internet, design a rating system (for example: five stars, four stars, etc)
to show which foods are more nutritious.
Explain your rating system and tell why each food received the
corresponding rating. On the Teen Scene: Food
